EXHIBITION AND ACCESS
What is tamoxifen?
Tamoxifen (Nolvadex® or Soltamox®) is a drug that treats hormone-positive (hormone-positive) breast cancer. It can also help prevent breast cancer. Since tamoxifen was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1998, it has become one of the most widely used treatments for breast cancer.
What is hormone receptor positive breast cancer?
Hormone receptor positive breast cancer tumors need the hormones estrogen or progesterone (or sometimes both) to grow. About 75% of breast cancers are hormone-positive in postmenopausal patients. Your healthcare professional will perform a biopsy and lab tests to determine the type of cancer and the most effective treatment.
How does tamoxifen work?
Tamoxifen is a type of hormone therapy called a selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM). The drug binds to hormone receptors (specific proteins) in breast cancer cells. Once inside the cells, the medicine blocks the cancer from accessing the hormones it needs to multiply and grow.
